Haggai 2:23 ‘In that day,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says the LORD, ‘and will make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you,’ says the LORD of hosts.
A signet ring is a traditional piece of jewelry featuring a flat or raised top surface that is often engraved with a family crest, initials, or monogram. In antiquity, a signet ring was used as a physical signature.
Here, the Lord has made Zerubbabel His signet ring, as if to say Zeru is God’s authenticator! If God sends you him, he is God’s voice & judgement — whatsoever he says or instructs. He is God’s invisible mouth made visible. He is God’s word made flesh; Even God’s hand.
Let us study how weighty the signet ring was in the Bible. In Genesis, after Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, and provided the solution for the famine, Pharaoh appointed him Prime Minister, second to him in rank. After setting him over all the land of Egypt, he removed his signet ring and gave it to Joseph (Gen 41:41-42)
To avoid controversy, I believe a signet ring had no other copy. It was one and one alone. This meant that all decrees to be published required Joseph to be sought by the Pharaoh; for he wore the ring. He’d receive the scroll with law, and stamp on it with the ring. Joseph stood in a position of much authority.
This is allegorical to God and us. Though He bears all authority, He needs the yieldedness of men through whom He can operate & extend His reign on earth, just like the devil and his minions need the collaboration of human bodies in which they can puppeteer.
Jesus became God’s signet ring; and He too said all authority in Heaven & earth had been given to Him (Matt 28:18) & He gave us that same authority from His jurisdiction as He pleased (Luk 10:19a) … making us rings too (only those who have believed on Him).
Imagine wielding God’s power. No wonder He said whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; & whatsoever you’ll loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven (Matt 18:18). That is Joseph sinking Pharaoh’s ring into the wax: authorizing laws or statutes. This means Joseph may not have needed to consult the king every time he needed to use the ring’s power. I am not advocating for non-consultancy with God, but; there is a place where God carries out man’s decree as well for men who are for Him to the end that men fear Him! Did Elijah not say it would not rain according to His word and it did not?! He never consulted the Spirit even a bit!
Whatsoever you shall bound on earth … NOT — only what you have inquired of me first!
Obviously, for the mature christian, God would have already given you the desires of His heart; hence they are desiring to manifest or enforce what God desired first! It’d also emanate from seeing a gap where His will has not been done on earth as it is in Heaven!
Joseph was second after Pharaoh, and us bearing the ring makes us gods on earth, in the likeness of God in Heaven. We get to create and establish and pull down or put up, just as He did during creation by His word. The importance of the signet ring in our day is; we live in a world where pharaohs have risen up that don’t know Jacob. They fear that we christians are peculiar and will dominate over the Egyptians. They also don’t fear God … but they fear the plagues! And as He did to Moses, as He did for Zerubbabel, God is choosing you today to be His ring!
The signet ring is also some form of alpha and omega. Only the person who wore it sealed the law or reversed it. Elijah said no rain would fall, and only he would make it fall again. In Daniel 6, Daniel was preferred over other princes and presidents. These plotted against him making the king sign a decree that whoever petitioned another God save the king would be thrown in a den of lions.
Even if the king was displeased that his Daniel was on the wrong side of the law, he couldn’t alter what the signet ring had stamped. Even after he had been placed in the den, the king sealed the entrance with that same ring!
And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his Lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel. (Daniel 6:17)
But Daniel served the King of kings! Darius was below that King of kings, and HIS signet ring sealed the lions’ mouths instead! HE sits above the earthly decrees; and His choice reigns supreme & superior to those that hail from the visible plane! When Daniel emerged still alive, only then did Darius reverse the decree he had passed. You can see how only he who wears the signet wields the power to reverse …
When sickness took Lazarus, Jesus showed up with (or as) THAT supreme signet ring & reminded death that it had no authority or say whatsoever in taking his friend’s life! The King said “I have not agreed to Lazarus’ going yonder.” Immediately, the laws of decomposition and time were emasculated!
I see signet rings raining from Heaven & appearing to the saints. May you receive & wear yours! God gave! Jesus has now given! Embody that identity! Pull down! Plant anew! Decree a thing and it shall be established. Where the word of a king is, there is power! And He has made you kings and priests unto Himself! Where there is a casting down, you shall say there’s a lifting up. You are God’s signet in this age! You bear His authority!
You are His beloved in whom He is well pleased. The world will hear you! (Matt 17:5) May He teach you to exercise the authority He has given you! Where death has prevailed, wear your ring and seal the raising of the dead.
Ezekiel appeared in the valley of dry bones, and the ring appeared, causing him to undo decay! He spoke and petitioned the wind. You have the wind of His Spirit in you. As you speak judgement, you breathe Him out, and as He hovered over the waters in the beginning, He hovers over what you say and animates it!
Arise O God’s signet! Arise and seal it!
