Spirit of Vashti

Esther 1:10-12 On the seventh day, when the king’s heart was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who ministered to King Ahasuerus as attendants, To bring Queen Vashti before the king, with her royal crown, to show the peoples and the princes her beauty, for she was fair to behold. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command conveyed by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was enraged, and his anger burned within him.

In the story of Esther, there was a Queen who refused to obey the summon by her King. One friend of mine was praying and she said, “We come against the Spirit of Vashti. That refuses us to honor the grace of the King. We won’t make destiny mistakes. We come against every conspiracy of the enemy to take us down.”

Basically, what Vashti did was to dishonor the King Xerxes when He called for her. And I can’t number how many times I’ve heard God call me to the secret place, to see me, and I put him off—shrugged my shoulders, and continued with business as usual.

The King was wielding power over 127 provinces all the way from India to Ethiopia! That was some other level of power. All that land under his governance, all those armies, and she couldn’t spare some minutes with him!

Before you judge her, judge yourself! Diagnose the log in your eye!

God is a King like the earth has never seen. The Alexander the Greats can’t compare. As they reigned over empires, God reigns over all the waters and land which these empires didn’t know about. God made the very air we breathe. He can tell it to halt, and off you go—dead!

I put myself in Vashti’s shoes; refusing to avail myself to God—the knower of things to come! How foolish! What if He wanted to tell me of one of these things that are to come? Like my friend prayed; indeed it is a destiny mistake. For you can’t tell how many lives to come are to be impacted indirectly by your obedience to the command of the king.

It wasn’t even about executing a thing. The king just wanted to see her!

O may we not make the same mistake. Otherwise, if it was an assignment she was to be given, perhaps a gift … we too could be in danger of missing out on it in case King God decides to let out a decree to find Him another queen.

Vashti left the palace afterwards. Perhaps she returned to her village home. I don’t think her parents were happy. All those royal benefits were gone! People used to bow for her, but now she’s a mere commoner, all because she didn’t respond to the King’s call.

I wonder …

What if Moses ignored the burning bush! What if Samuel ignored the voice that called in the night! They’d have missed out going down in history too!

Let’s not ignore the slightest nudges of God’s need to see us. Millions — like for Moses’ case — could be depending on it!

Psalms 122:1 When they said, “Let’s go to the house of GOD,” my heart leaped for joy.
