How to become a City on a Hill + How to obtain your Inheritance

Matt 5:14 ‘You are the light of the World, a city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.’

Many are quick to claim; ‘Yes, I am a city on a hill,’ but if we let the earthly things teach us the spiritual, you’ll realize that no one is born a city! Just like the old proverb says, Rome wasn’t built in one day! I have an example; Worship Harvest is located in Naalya, a suburb on the outskirts of Kampala city, in Uganda. As you ascend towards the hill where this institution resides, you’ll notice a seven storied building under construction.

The construction of this building began in 2011. The road to its location existed by then, but nothing showed that this ‘city’ was coming up. 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, construction went on, but nothing distinct could be observed to stand out on this hill as it had only been 3 floors.

In 2017, enormous acceleration occurred and the building began going higher and higher and as of today, the building stands with two towers each not lower than 5 floors having a 3000-seater auditorium joining the two!

The building is now a landmark and more; having a church, a school, offices and soon a bank and hospital. There’s a long process to all of this though; before you claim ‘I am a city…’ Acts 20:32 states, ‘Now brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to BUILD YOU UP and GIVE YOU AN INHERITANCE among those that are sanctified.’

To become a city, the building material is the Word. The resources needed are the Word. The labor that will build you up is the Word. Though the Word will do the rest, it will not walk up to you and do the building; you have one role to do; and that’s paying the COST. You will both spend money to buy Christian literature that will catalyze your knowledge in the Word, but also invest TIME in the Word itself.

The more of the Word you’ll spend time reading and meditating, the bigger the city you’ll become. To prove this, you’ll realize that though each country has a capital city, some cities are bigger and more famous than others. Though there are many buildings, some sky scrapers are taller than others! The more Word you consume will determine how high you scale to the sky as a building and how wide you spread as a city;

And then, about inheritance; Psalm 16:5-6 talks about God being our inheritance! (Hollup-what?) Yes, you heard right! Stop fighting to inherit that small plot of land, or that small business. Why fight for a plot, when you’ve inherited the whole planet? Why fight for a small business when you’ve inherited heaven’s gold? Why even fight for any of those when you’ve inherited the very guy who made all things!

Now remember what Acts 20:32 said? ‘…which is able to build you up and GIVE YOU AN INHERITANCE.’ Yes, you have received God as your inheritance, but just like one would need to access the land title and the land board to access the land they have inherited, the Word of God is how you’ll UNLOCK the inheritance that He is; for you.

As you flip those pages, as you scroll to the next verse, pieces of God, draught by draught replace who you are; You start seeing as God sees. You start giving and loving as God loves. You start walking as God, talking as God, creating as God, until you are called a ‘god’; a full embodiment of Him (Psalm 82:6 ‘…Ye are gods…)

The Word you have received that God is your inheritance is like receiving a receipt of a 62-inch Samsung TV. Having a receipt doesn’t mean you have received the TV into your house; perhaps you were given the address where to take the receipt and pick up the TV. Now even if you’ve picked up the TV, it doesn’t mean you have assembled & connected it in your sitting room and are watching it. Once you do that, you are fully utilizing the receipt. Same here. It’ll be a process, but each step gets you closer to fulfilling and living the promise; that you are a city!
