Increase & Comfort

Thou shalt increase my greatness, And comfort me on every side. Psalm‬ ‭71‬:‭21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

After my graduation last Thursday, the question came: now what? Within me, anxiety attempted to arise.

Psalm 71:21 had been resurfacing time to time every week; and so it did again. This time God took me below its surface. He said, ‘I have increased you with a degree today, and I will comfort you with the need of it by the world.’

In other words … men will come in need of architectural services. Kings and nations at that!

We have seen some great men fake smiles before the public and then return to pestering and a world without peace. That is not so for you child of God. With every increase God gives you, the grace of comfort shall follow.

Has He asked you to go to Pharaoh dear Moses? He’ll accompany you with the comfort of a miraculous staff!

Has He given you a house? He’ll minister the comforts of funds for any wanting bills! Has He given you children? He’ll grant grace to babysit them. Or send you a nanny that takes care of them as though her own.

Has He promoted you Daniel? Are you worried of demotion? Relax … He will comfort you with the excellent spirit that every king will be in need of! The road for you is upward and upward only!

Has He given you vineyards you didn’t plant, wells you didn’t dig? He will comfort thee with the security required and the stewardship to maintain it all. Has He given you a car? The comfort of fuel and peripheral services He’ll serve.

Now some people are afraid of increase because they think it will lead to their destruction following the likes of Solomon. His wisdom caused him to advance in vast wealth, but, he thought he could as well get as many wives as he could. In the end they led him to worship their gods!

So Solomon writes in his books that one should not ask God for too much wealth, or too little. He was reflecting on his own. As if to say; let God give you just enough to keep you stayed on him, and not too little that you are tempted to steal or perform some sort of wickedness such as corruption.

But God promises comforts with your increase. The New Testament creature is blessed in such a manner that they have God Himself dwelling in them to help remold them into His likeness. Thus, it can take too much stubbornness and unyieldedness to go astray, or to let the increase turn them away from righteousness.

The comforts God gives include fruits of His Spirit like humility and self-control. These can keep one at bay, that no amount of increase might destroy them. For these to bud, obviously, God has to work on a man’s character, especially before the increase comes. That is why David had to fight bears and lions … for one day, Goliath was to come as another bear! But if David had killed one or two or three bears before, Goliath would be no different.

The wealth issue is pertinent, especially to the kingdom and the advancement of the gospel. If you take Solomon’s advice of ‘just enough’, you can’t expect to do much for the gospel. It will only cater for your immediates.

The fact that King David testified in Psalm 71:21 was a realization of what God had done for Him. And if He did it for Him, He can do it for you! If He did not spare His only son but delivered Him up for you, how shall He surely not do this other thing!

If He increased Abraham, if He increased Isaac, then expect the same; for you are in their lineage by faith!

The devil can make you grumble or complain that you are expanding and causing some sort of inconvenience for others just like the case between Abraham and Lot. But the comfort was the solution Abraham presented to the table that both nations could remain at peace. In that same likeness, God will provide the wisdom you require when your increase seems to be unsettling you.

Just as Isaac prospered, continued prospering until he became very prosperous, expect increase in every corner! But with it, expect comfort … on every side! His blessing makes you rich and adds no sorrow with it! He in fact asks you to enlarge your tent! This increase is inevitable.

Isaiah 54:2-3 Enlarge the place of your tent, And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not spare; Lengthen your cords, And strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, And your descendants will inherit the nations, And make the desolate cities inhabited.‬
