Rebuking the Devourer

I was rushing through ‘town’ today while shopping. ‘Town’ is slang for city or downtown, where a lot is always happening in Kampala. This ranges from street preaching to strangers approaching you to ask if what they offer you need. Part of that ‘a lot’ includes thieving as well, and since I’ve been a victim before (having my laptop stolen, plus phone and cash), the instinct was to keep eyes out and move as swiftly as my feet could carry me.

I had just received change while on Nasser Road. I paid the bodaboda, and I had zoomed away very fast, placing the rest of the money in my front bag whose strap ran across my torso and back.

Suddenly, there was a sharp pull on my right hand.

My guard went up — remembering the robbery.

I turned around and a young man had bent behind me. He then straightened back up and handed me two notes of my change which I had dropped unbeknownst to me.

I hadn’t opened the zipper due to the rush, and in so doing, the legal tenders had missed their abode.

Shockingly, the young man handed me the cash without even stopping for a ‘thank you.’ By the time those words had gone out my mouth fully, I couldn’t see him as he had vanished into the crowd of busy people.

I was shocked that such good people still exist! And amidst the awe, I heard God say, “… I rebuked the devourer for you.”

For those unfamiliar with that statement, its reference hails from Malachi 3. It’s one of the things God promises to do for us if we are faithful with our tithe.

“And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.”

You can clearly see that the cash was part of the fruit of my past tilling, and the devourer here is that legendary thief: who comes to steal, kill and destroy. He had tried to steal from me — and yes it wasn’t the first time I had dropped huge sums of money while rushing in town… But God ensured it didn’t happen again!

Call it carelessness, but He rebuked it anyway. This time, God let me know what He had just done, but you must also be rest assured that even when He hasn’t informed you, He rebukes the devourer plenty atimes off your property and your profit or seed. Seed includes your children or job or business. Many people could try to jeopardize your position at work, but God will give them a taste of their own medicine.

As your children play in the dirt, the enemy might try to get infections into their system, but God will slap him off on your behalf. The kids might play close to the road and an accident could be waiting to happen anytime, but God will do what He must: protecting. You see, we won’t be careful all the time, (just like I didn’t when I dropped the money) but when this happens, God steps in to take care.

You might ask “Won’t God protect those who don’t tithe?”

Well, I’d look at it as extra surveillance. Imagine your house has barbed wire or electric, over the fence. You think you’re so safe, until some bandit succeeds in disengaging the electric system or getting across the barbed wire. As he lands into your compound, he notices there’s been a watchman monitoring his every move, pointing a gun at him with a ferocious dog next to him. And the funny bit is; in the morn, you’ll wake up and the watchman won’t even tell you that he ensnared a culprit. You’ll think it was another ordinary night.

God will do that extra watch to ensure nothing you gained by hard work is lost if you only keep faithful with giving back His tithe.

He’ll pay His vows!

Try Him, He says. And see if He’ll not open up the windows of Heaven and pour out blessings so great on you that there will be not room enough to receive it all!

In my meditation of the same, I kept wondering about the man who just handed back that cash to me. My thoughts tended to the angelic… And yes it may seem far fetched, but even if you oppose, you have no evidence to prove that the man wasn’t an angel. It’s been hours since, but my conviction still stands that it could have been one.

And I can only see God smile coyly back at me from the corner of my bedroom in regards to this
