You are the light of the world. A city built (set) on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14
When I read this scripture once again, I noticed purpose and position. You are not just light. You are the light of and for something, and that’s for the whole world. Your influence is meant to touch every corner of the world. It is not for your family alone. It is not for your neighborhood alone. It is not for your nation alone. It is not for your continent alone. It’s destined to extend to the entire world.
Jesus then said a city built on a hill can not be hidden. Cities are places of influence: influencing money, influencing businesses, influencing laws, influencing heads of entities and so much more. On top of that, cities are capitals of countries. They are the face that appears on a nation’s ID. They bear the image of the country. That speaks much about who you are.
Jesus however emphasizes more: that a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. This means a city can be hidden, if it’s in a valley. Since this is related to light, I could exegete saying; that even if you are light, the matter of height or elevation has to be considered…
To light up every corner of a room, a bulb has to be strategically positioned, lest you’ll have excess shadows. Imagine it’s fixed under a bed. One will still struggle to see the full extent of their wardrobe, or other things within the room.
If the bulb is placed right up in the center of the room, the occupants won’t struggle to see it. Likewise, for a city to be easily seen, there has to be an elevation to it.
In a nutshell, if you are going to be a city effective, influencing things in the world, you have to do uncommon and extra things. Your prayers have to be elevated. You can’t pray once a week and expect a city-kind of influence. You can’t work without diligence or excellence and expect a city-kind of influence. You can’t show up late, and expect a city-kind of influence!
The elevation to everything you do will guarantee your elevation as a city from a valley to a hill. As you continue in consistency, you’ll be elevated to a point as high as a mountain.
You’ll become a landmark, directing men to their destinations. You’ll gain more and more influence, or gain back that which you lost. And you will soon no longer be ignored.
When kings were said to come to your RISING — it meant your elevated status, and not your downtrodden one. Nations can only come to a light that’s burning bright in the sky, just like flying insects do to a bulb.
When the sun is still below the horizon, not everything is lit. Men remain asleep. Those who wake up and find it’s still dark decide to go back to sleep. Others awake when the bright sun rays leak through their curtains and slash between their eyelids.
Your elevation as the sun in this case means you’d have a role to play in the defining of TIME for so many in the world. Of course not everyone wakes up with the sun. Some awake way earlier. Some way after. But many are awoken by the sun’s rising.
If you are the sun then, you have no time to slouch or be lazy, or step out of line. You have to keep diligent, shining daily, rising on time, setting on time, whether some men continue to sleep or not. Like I said already, it’s these principles done that will cause one not only to become a larger city, but an elevated one whose renown will reach every corner of the earth.
In my findings, I realize that cities can become obsolete too. Isaiah 17:1-4 says The burden against Damascus. ” Behold, Damascus will cease from [being] a city, And it will be a ruinous heap. The cities of Aroer [are] forsaken; They will be for flocks Which lie down, and no one will make [them] afraid. The fortress also will cease from Ephraim, The kingdom from Damascus, And the remnant of Syria; They will be as the glory of the children of Israel,” Says the LORD of hosts. ” In that day it shall come to pass [That] the glory of Jacob will wane, And the fatness of his flesh grow lean.
Look at Babylon. Look at Rome. I know the causes to their fall are the many, but, since you represent the city of Zion (Heb 12:22), know that you have a standard to keep.
The antidote to obsolescence is to keep being built, enlarging your territory & dominion, until you cover a town, a district, a region, a country, more countries, the continent, and the earth. The Word of God is key. As … if you meditate upon it, day and night, you will make your way prosperous (as a city) and you’ll have good success (as a city) (Joshua 1:8). And … this word is able to BUILD you up and give you an inheritance among the saints (Acts 20:32). Build you up from a bungalow, to a flat, to a sky scraper, to a citadel, to a city, and into an empire!
Maintain your elevation! And that elevation will enlarge you!
