Ministry of Midwifery

Last week’s Tuesday, we celebrated this year’s women’s day. Here’s a story from Exodus 1:15-21 that is going to bless each one of you concerning purpose whose inspiration is women since midwives are mostly their gender…

‘Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one [was] Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see [them] on the birthstools, if it [is] a son, then you shall kill him; but if it [is] a daughter, then she shall live.”

(For those not aware, midwives are trained health professionals who help healthy women during labor, delivery, and after the birth of their babies either at health centers, at home, or at hospitals…)

Let’s continue,

‘But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?” And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women [are] not like the Egyptian women; for they [are] lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.”

‘Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.’

You notice in the story, that the midwives wielded a certain power. The pharaoh asked them to kill a baby if it was male and spare it if it was female.

Midwives have the power to either kill or save, since they are the first hands to receive the child once it’s out the womb. Notice they are not nurses. Nurses hold the child pretty much later. How critical to be the first to hold a fresh child out of the womb. It is in rare cases that a parent of the child holds them first. How significant!

However, this doesn’t apply to babies alone, but to DREAMS as well.

Many of us are in positions of high regard in peoples’ lives where our hands are able to receive their dreams or kill them. We are at gates to permit ideas that could have flipped the world upside down…or trash them! A midwife can decide to say, the child is dead! If they are not believers, well they might give up that easily, starting to say sorry right away, while the mother’s child has blacked out during labor!

Parents are an example of midwives. I remember a relative in whose custody I was in who once scoffed at the idea that I was writing a book. That was way back when I hadn’t owned a computer yet, and just wrote literally, by pen, in what we call black books.

“Foolish! Do you know how much it costs to write a book! Haha, just childish this is!”

I was always drained by such comments. My spirit would have crushed, had I not guarded my dream, had I not kept pushing if this midwife said ‘there’s no child coming out even when I pushed!’ … I published the first in 2020. The one I was writing when the comment came was the 5th.

Maybe you’re a mentor, or an inspiration to someone. Be careful what you speak. Your influence over a person could place their destiny in your hands. Of course I’m not saying permit the wrong ideas to manifest. Rather fan the flames of that which is worthy of praise out of them!

With my example of a relative, we see that sometimes we have to be our own midwives (sometimes), because even the closest friend or family couldn’t be happy with the ambitions with which you fly. So you have to gather courage to help you through the ‘labour’.

Like midwives encourage a woman during birth pangs and contractions, saying ‘push, push, you’re almost there…breathe…’, we too can find courage to say the same (just in case there’s no one at all to midwife us). If there’s, the better! King David called it ‘encouraging yourself in the Lord’…

This self-midwivery is even seen among the Hebrew women where it is written, “…the Hebrew women [are] not like the Egyptian women; for they [are] lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.” They didn’t wait. They pushed the children (their dreams) already…before the midwives came.

‘Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.’

When we are faithful midwives, it is well with us. God deals bountifully with us. God provided for these midwives households for their safely delivering the babies of the Hebrew children… So as you continue in the faith, are you safely delivering the Israelites out of Egypt? Are you safely delivering the Ninevehites out of their wickedness? Are you safely delivering children from darkness unto light?

Are you safely delivering the Ephesians and the foolish Galatians into great revelation? Are you safely delivering Jesus the savior of mankind into the world around you?

This ministry requires you to be at your best in wisdom, and character, (to know which kind of people you’re to help give birth, to deal with the pregnancy complexities of all manner of idea & dream wombs) lest you find yourself angry, like Moses, who having cared for Israel’s pregnancy, got fired when the labor was almost complete, having another man take the credit of safely delivering the child into the promised land while he watched outside the labor ward!

God says, ‘as He is (a great midwife), so are we!’ (John 4:17), and I sense a fear in you, asking whether you’re a good midwife! He says don’t be afraid. He teaches you to encourage, to speak to wombs, and to safely deliver. Like the Shunammite woman, God will teach you not only to give birth, but you’ll close the gates that try to take the child or idea or dream that your womb formed enabling it to live long to fulfill divine purpose!

Hebrews 11:33-36 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. WOMEN received their dead raised to life again…

Man, necessity has been laid upon you to safely deliver the people of His pasture & kingdom into the promised land!

WOMAN, necessity has been laid upon your womb to safely deliver the plans and purposes of God! “PUSH…”
