Preparation for God is pretty much like preparing for a guest, only that this guest is far more significant than the Queen of England, or the President of the US, and yet doesn’t need you to prepare the finest China or hire red carpets leading down your rugged murrum road to your house.
Many times we could be late yet we are the hosts, but He’s not like men. A minute He turns around. And if we have a rendezvous with Him and we don’t make it, He still shows up.
When God’s to be hosted, I’ve found that that good music prepares the atmosphere so well. The mood is just set in reception enough to have Him.
However, just like if you’re being hosted as a person you wouldn’t enjoy not being attended to fully. Imagine your host attending to their business in your presence. It offends us, especially if you killed worthy programs to be there
God might not be offended when we do the same for Him, but divided attention could make us miss Him like Martha. We have to ensure that we focus on Him fully and not the running children or the loud TV or the phone text. Be in the moment. Prepare the snacks much earlier so that you have that heart to heart moment with Him serving words;
Say yours, Let Him say His. Laugh, cry if so. But recognize this isn’t just any visitor. This is God, the maker of all you see! Like we share videos on phones with those we host, God could take you on a trip to the galaxies, or to times past like Paul, or to times to come like John the revelator. He takes you into the video itself.
For the departure; God doesn’t leave. It’s us who focus on other activities momentarily (which’s not a bad thing) but, unlike Him, we can’t fully think about someone all time, while running the entire universe, at rest, thinking about other billions of people and how the tiniest of birds will be fed, all at the same time.
He doesn’t leave us practically because He said He’d never will, nor forsake us. At some point, you realize it’s Him who hosts us, turning our hearts to Him, to rise and pray to Him if need be. No wonder we lose sleep some time in the night, or concentration during some activities, as He desires to host us.
His being with us at all times gives Him capacity to host us all the time, although, remember, hosting requires that being in the moment, so He will interrupt us at some point like Jonah, not because we are running from purpose, but so because we’ve been entangled with the cares of the world like Martha yet He desires us at His feet, listening and feeding our spirits.
He isn’t caring about the edible pleasantries. What matters is the eternal pleasure that He delights in! Which is you!
And, even when we host people, it is exciting when the conversation has gone way deep, and your guest says “My next appointment has been cancelled…So I can stay a little longer.”
The joy! The joy of a reunion that goes way longer than anticipated is unexplainable!
This is akin to God. I find that the longer we tarry in His presence, when we are not quick to leave that prayer or worship time, extra dessert consisting of oil and wheat and wine is served. One eats and enjoys His presence to the full, which is a paradox to God.
The more of Him one has, the more thirsty or hungry one gets. Unlike the normal, where when we have a lot of stuffing, we get disgusted. Where when a lot of ice cream is licked, brain freezes come along. Where when a lot of cake is eaten, the stomach goes on strike. A lot of God, and our spirits just wonder and get curious the more, “Who are you, really???”
So, the next time you host God— wait! The next time God hosts you, ensure to be in the moment, to provide your full attention, to expose your honesty, to have prepared prior avoiding distractions, to expect more of Him, and to tarry a little longer with Him than you had earlier planned, all with the guidance of His Spirit of course.
Enjoy your next hostings until this truth you can freely confess;
Psalms 84:10 For a day in thy courts [is] better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Understand, that with Him is the best place to be!
