The Standard

The word standard means, ‘used or accepted as normal or average.’ Other synonyms include; normal, usual, common, accustomed, expected, everyday, regular, routine, day-to-day, daily, established, settled, set or fixed.

Now the world is going to come and force its normal or average on you. But there’s a normal you were predestined to. Imagine you misplace your dear diary. To you, it meant a lot.

Its normal was being updated on a daily with what transpired through your day. Now Imagine it landed in the wrong hands. To that finder, it could mean nothing. He’d subject that diary to another normal, like using it for toilet paper or sketching.

Like that diary, you have an owner. Only He can update you daily. Only He knows how you can experience ‘normal’. His word, therefore, is your standard. For it gives you purpose as a diary.

God is He. Isn’t it He that made you? If He says that you are beautiful, then that’s your normal. If He says wealth and riches shall be in your house, that then is your usual. If He says you shall not fear day or night, that then is your custom. If He says ALL nations shall call you blessed, then that should be your expectation.

If He says you display His splendor and glory every waking breath, then that’s your everyday. Regardless of whether you feel good or bad. If He says you are healed, then you are, despite the doctor’s tests and proclamations. If he says you are blessed, then that’s your regular.

If He says you shall carry to full term, and shall not lose your child or bear prematurely, then that’s established. If He says no evil shall befall you, then that’s settled. If He says all things will work out for your good, then that is fixed.

What He has said in His Word about you is THE STANDARD. Whether there are no signs to prove it, it is still the standard. Whether it takes long, it is still the standard. Whether your mother or father has left you, He will not forsake you.

That is His standard. His promise. His oath. It is not just ‘your’ standard for Him. It is His mandate. His to-do. His to-fulfill. His to-confirm. His can’t-fail-to. For He is not man that He should lie!Regardless…even in this goodness, there’s a flaw. The flaw comes when you as a person, do not know what He says or if you know it but do not BELIEVE it.

When you as a diary, do not know what He has written in you! For if you do not know, then you won’t know His Word. And if you do not know His Word, then how will you know what the standard is!If you are indifferent to Him, anyone can pick you up, and write the wrong things which were never meant to be written in or about you, or worse, use you as toilet paper!

GET TO KNOW WHOSE DIARY YOU ARE, and only after then, will you know what’s supposed to be your normal, your usual and your expectation. Not everybody is supposed to write in you! Not everyone holds or authors your standard.

We want to read biographies of men and make them our standards. Wrong Move!

Remember a diary doesn’t buy itself off the shelf! Therefore, let’s caution ourselves as well not to set standards for ourselves. He might say all our sins are forgiven.

But we don’t notice that ‘all’ includes those in the past, present and the future. (For God exists in all those three dimensions. He saw what you’d do in your tomorrow and chose to forget it) Him forgetting it and you reminding Him is you lowering the standard!

Abeg don’t you fear God that you dey lower it! (In Nigerian accent)

‘Verbum Dei est Vexillum’ is Latin translated to say God’s Word is the Standard.

Rising above it is impossible. Falling short of it or compromising it or lowering it, is the commonplace challenge!
