Son of My Right Hand

Have you ever blamed yourself for the state of your parents? Or something vile…? In the Bible, we see Jacob’s last born Benjamin, who as his mother gave birth to him, passed away.

Genesis 35:17-18 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; you will have this son also.” And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

Now I’m imagining Ben growing up and discovering that he was the cause of his mother’s death. Condemnation could have taken a toll of him. Though that part isn’t mentioned, maybe you, as a reader, have experienced it.

Ben-Oni means ‘Son of my sorrow’. Benjamin means ‘Son of my right hand’.

This is the FATHER naming the son. Jacob is representing a prophecy talked about, where God names us Himself! (Isaiah 45:4, 49:1) As the world (Rachel) gave him a name based on her circumstances (pain), the father named him by faith, something that means good!

If Jacob so represents God, let’s explore this ‘right handness‘.

In Psalms 16:11, David says “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence [is] fullness of joy; At Your right hand [are] pleasures forevermore.”Notice what is at God’s right hand—pleasures evermore! If therefore Benjamin means ‘son of my right hand’, this means we are pleasures forevermore! God delights in us! We are His pleasures and delight.

There’s a dualism here. As we pleasure in Him, He doth so pleasures in us as well! To concrete this, see what He says in Isaiah 62:3-5,

“You shall also be a crown of glory In the hand of the LORD, And a royal diadem In the hand of your God. You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, Nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate; But you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; For the LORD delights in you, And your land shall be married. For [as] a young man marries a virgin, [So] shall your sons marry you; And [as] the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, [So]shall your God rejoice over you.”

What?

The God who created all that I see and know rejoices over me?!

Yes. Yes He does!

He continues to say in Zephaniah 3:17,

“The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet [you] with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Isn’t this too good to be true! You bring GOD joy! If you were a TV station, you’d be His favorite station. No angel would bother touching that remote! By His Spirit, He is OBSESSED about you!

To Him, you matter! To Him, you mean the world. To Him you’re a son or daughter of joy.

So drop whatever accusations, names, mistakes, sins, grievances that you’ve been attributed to or done in the past. The God of all that you see fathers you today, and seeks to give you a new name!

He says in Isaiah 60:15, ” Whereas you have been forsaken and hated, So that no one went through [you,] I will make you an eternal excellence, A joy of many generations.”

An eternal what? Do you believe it! My oh my!

A joy to a few people? No! But to many generations! What good news! What extravagance! If by this point you still feel down then I must say it is impossible, for such a report can’t keep you calm and collected in your blues.

In the book of Revelation, heaven is on His right hand, and those judged for hell are to His left. You being the son of His right hand practically places you in Heaven already!👯

Ohhhhh! I’m dancing all by myself!

Get up dressed with a garment of praise, and lift your head up to the sky! You’re loved! You’re a treasure! You’re God’s precious thing! Walk with a spring in your bounce!

You bring Him joy! You’re His pleasure forevermore! You’re the son of His right hand!

Malachi 3:12 And all nations will call you blessed, For you will be a delightful land,” Says the LORD of hosts.
